Wildlife Around The House

Autumn 2001

The bat introduced himself into the house somehow, and impressed us with his flying skills before I eventualy snagged him suspended from a door jamb. I was very careful with the wee beastie, as we have a real affection for them. They roost in the trees ouside the house in the summer, and it is one of the delights of a balmy New England summer dusk to sit by the pool and watch the bats flitting over the surface over the water; anything that eats mosquitoes is automatically our friend, but the special grace and quiet they bring to the job is particularly appealing.

The skunk mooched into the garage when we forgot to close the door one evening; as is their wont, he didn't seem particularly perturbed by our presence, and I managed to chivvy him out without being skunk-stunked.

In the third picture, there's a wild rabbit cleaning itself by the pool - honest, guv.

A couple of visitors not pictured here : the occasional deer, and the perennial pool frog, who seems quite happy to hang around in the chlorinated water.
